Have helped a friend with a leaky 2cv engine yesterday. They did put in a rebuild engine. But at the pushrod tubes it was leaking at one side. So they took the head off, cleaned it and put it back with a bit of gasket paste on the rubbers. No effect after 1 minute it started leaking again. So they took the head off and left it on the workbench. Gave it a check there was a small dent in one of the tubes so i dressed that. I tokk the spings and streched them a bit (2mm). Than put the head back with again a bit of gasket paste. We started and had the engine running for a while and it seemed to be ok now.

My 90-year-old Morris Minor has been in storage at my friend's place in Herefordshire for the last few months. I have been over a couple of time and taken it out for a run, with one of them being a local (4 miles) run to The New Inn at Pembridge on New Year's Day for a vintage (pre-(second world)war) car meeting. Mid January saw me take it on a 30-odd-mile run out towards the border with Wales at Kington without missing a beat. So it came as a bit of shock a few days ago when the old thing refused to start. After much head scratching and checking various things I discovered the spring part on the ignition points that pulls the points closed had broken, so the points were just flapping around and not making contact. I've now bought a NOS set of points which should hopefully arrive by Wednesday then I can get the Morris running again.

I've fitted the new ignition points to the Morris and had an uneventful, thankfully, journey back to Worcester (32 miles). The engine didn't miss a beat. This has been the first ignition points replacement I've done myself in over 25 years (the 2CV is on 123ignition) and it felt good when the engine fired up and ran sweetly.

For those in the UK and fairly close to the routes that are likely to be taken, keep an eye out for Austin Sevens making their way north or south (either way) doing the Centenary JogLe/LeJog any time over the next two weeks. I know some have already started. It's not a race (participant must take a minimum of 48hrs to complete it), and there's no set route or time.
