My 1932 Minor is working off a 6v Negative earth system. The starter motor is really past its best. I've found a company who can supply a starter motor for the MG M-Type 'Midget' 1929-1932, which is basically the same car and uses the same 6v starter motor. The downside is the brand new unit advertised as fitting the MG operates off a 12v system. The conversion will more than double the £222 cost. I don't want to go down the route of converting the Minor to 12volts, but I am wondering whether there is some kind of electronic system that will allow me to keep the car on 6v, but give the 12v starter motor the kick it requires. Something like an inverter. Has anyone here got any thoughts or advice? Ta very muchly, indeed.

We had fire engines here that had two 6volt batteries but there was a special starter switch that did shortly put them in serie so they had 12 volts on the starter.

Can you get the starter motor reconditioned?

Hi, I had new brushes fitted back in the summer but the commutator remains the original one as the part is no longer available. It's very worn and even though it was cleaned up it's still not doing its job.

I was thinking maybe fitting that particular 12v motor connected to a separate 12v battery (I'd need to figure out where to locate it) and a 12v starter switch. At the moment I'd need to turn on the ignition with the key, then push a big switch with my foot that is down by the gear lever. Does this sound like a good option? I suppose it'll allow the main 6v system to only need to deal with the ignition.

How would you charge the 12v battery with a 6v dynamo?

Does it have a starting handle? :)

I'll charge the battery externally. It'll only be used for starting the car.

It does have a starting handle, but just like the 2CV, it just doesn't want to start with it. I used to have a 1961 Issigonis designed Minor and that would start easily with the handle.
