Gas Mark 5 - How old is your car and who is your dad with? I have had both Steve and Mike on a Churchill policy for over 4 years as named drivers and has only ever cost something like £400 and they now have 3 years NCB if they go onto a Churchill policy.....They wont do fully comp on car over 25 years though maybe a drawback for many.....

Footman James won't do me at all - I think the main problem is dad uses his car for 'business' which upsets them. Several other companies would only do us if limited to 3000 miles a year, which is to low... :(

Weirdly, when I get my van done, and have the insurance in my name, but with mum and dad as named drivers, it'll drop down to £800 something. I'll be 18 then, so that might make a small difference, but everything else is the same except having the policy in me, or my dads name. Where is the sense in that?!

Nelsthebass - just trying to get a quote from Churchill now, the car is an '88 so should be fine...

Churchill gives me £1900 something, with a £800 excess. Not a vast improvement.
Both of my parents have over 10 years no claims...

This is madness!

I'm with footman james since April. I was 17, literally just passed my test. £1499, fully comp, euro breakdown but only with me as named driver and limited to 4500 miles, which I reckon we'll be over after Salbrizzle but ohwell. Its probably quite dodgy as its quite obvious its my car and not my dads. Not on an agreed value now afaik so won't get anything decent if the worst does happen. Hopefully it won't. However compared to some of my mates insuring their civics and corsas it's not that bad really. I know someone who pays over 4k for insurance on a new mini.

unfortunately this is what insurance is like 2day at your age....

I run a motor project up ere in the north and a lot of the lad that coming in have just pass there tests and they are paying £2000-3000 just insurance a 106 or polo in there parents name..
I've got a scooby at the moment costs me just over £500 full comp but its only the 2.0 turbo 4wd version only 220 bhp its not the wrx thing, anyway
One of the lads just for a laugh did a quote on it for him to drive....just passed his test ..............................................Wait for it £32,000
It does get easier the older you get (one benefit of being 35!!!!), but doesn't help that the very same lad wrote off his 1.0 106 2 weeks after passing his test......doesn't help the cause for the rest of you does it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

its actually illegal now to have the insurence in your parents name and you be on the insurence and be the main user of the car

it cost me 1400 last year to insure, about 1000 this year with admiral
its annoying because i dont drive like a twat, yet i get penalised and charged like a twat!
rant over

James, I feel your anguish mate but, I'm 37, have a clean licence (had 3 points for speeding though it didn't affect my insurance) and full no claims yet it still costs me around 4-500 quid a year to insure a daily modern-ish car just because I work in the motor trade.

Like yourself, I get tarred with the brushes of "mechanics" that mess about with their cars causing insurers grief when I don't do anything silly with mine. So, much the same as you being tarred with the "new driver, must be a muppet on the road" brush.

Unfortunately, where insurers would like to claim that every policy is "tailor made" for their client, the reality is that's bullshit and we'll continue to be rodgered.
