ive read various topics asking similar things, about holes being acceptable, ( i must add that its the first time ive ever put a car through an mot, its not due till november but if i need to change anything major then i have time!) what sort of things should i look out for before taking it to the test? and whats the most common fail i have a whopping hole in my spring can, if i turn it round it will be un noticeable, but if it was noticeable would it be failable?? when i had a motorbike, i managed to get an mot on the bike whith a fucked headlight switch and a fucked carb... |

I'm not an expert but aside from rust probably kingpins are the most common fail... |

also my headlamps point more to the right than left, is that normal? or is there a switch to change it to left? never been a problem in the mot history.. |

James, it's almost impossible to "second guess" an MOT result, especially over the internet! My advice would be to take it in for a test 28 days before it's actually due and see how it goes. If you know something needs doing, then fix it before you take it in but failing that, just suck it and see. If it passes, you'll have a post dated MOT, meaning about 13 months MOT. If it fails, you've got a month near as damn it to get it sorted. Simple. |

Take it in less than a month before it's due, and a pass will start from the expiry of the old one rather than the test date. Before that, and it'll just be from the test date. So - if it's expiring on 10th Nov, take it in on 11th Oct, and you'll get a cert until 10th Nov 2011. Take it in on 9th Oct, and you'll get one to 9th Oct. Quote: and whats the most common fail Rust. Full test manual is here - http://www.motinfo.gov.uk/htdocs/m4i00000101.htm - have a look through that, and you'll see that it's all very straightforward. There's not a lot that you can't check at home first. I don't think there's anything that a rotten spring can would fail on. But that doesn't mean it's a good idea to ignore it, does it? |

Rust within 30cm of a suspension mount? Bear in mind that the spring can Is a load bearing part. |
