Post Worrying news from the DVLA
I spotted this in the latest Practical Classics last night.

Quote:
DVLA targets engine changes
Practical Classics has received reports that the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency is refusing to issue V5C registration documents to owners of re-engined classic cars - unless they can show the exchange engine's history.
The move is understood to be one of a raft of measures designed to help prevent car and component theft by introducing an element of traceability into the system.
Classic car owners will now have to give details of the engine's supplier, along with full details of the car that it came from. Failure to supply this information could render the re-engined car unusable on UK roads. This means an end to the installation of used engines, which have sat around in garages for years, waiting for their moment to come once more, even if they are of the same type. It also prevents enthusiasts re-engining their cars with used engines of a different specification -such as V8s in MGBs and TR7s. [And indeed BMW or GSA engines in 2CVs.]

Well. I find that quite alarming, if it's true. What can we do about it?

Read this elsewhere. Can't see it happening John. Its the one plus point abut the Tory boys, they are also a powerful classic car lobby.

Drill out rivets and refit the original engine plate (the one that matches the V5 document) onto whatever engine you have fitted. In most cases, nobody will know or care.

Very true. Blank engine plates are readily available on French Ebay. Perhaps I should buy some and stamp them out to order, now there is a thought. Any takers.

Isn't it marvellous how illegality is grasped with such casual lack of concern when the law comes knocking on the door of one's own field of interest. ;)

So true, that particularly applies over here. The French don't give a toss to laws that are just plain stupid.
If the UK government want to catch people who nick engines then do so, don't put loads of grief on ordinary enthusiasts. Glad to say I don't need to worry about it.

Do you need an engine plate then? ;)

That's been my philosophy over here for years, but the government will insist on calling it 'illegal'.

If the police gave a toss when I ring them telling them my cars been broken into or stolen, and made some sort of attempt to catch the miscreants (or even come round and look at the scene of the crime etc) then I might have more faith or belief in the system. If, however, they want to carry on the way they are at the moment (a colleage of mine had to pay the police over £350 to get them to retrieve his forklift when it was stolen) then I'm afraid as I don't steal peoples cars or car parts then I can't be bothered to go through a needless paperchase no doubt at vast expense to me purely because I've changed an engine. The assumption that I must prove my innocence when the police refuse to prove the guilt of criminals fills me with anger.

Russ, I think you're beginning to get it. There's something very wrong happening in this land, and yet most of those that see it either choose to ignore it, or consider it no to be concern of theirs as it doesn't affect them directly. You're more likely to be arrested by a policeman these days than see one investigating a crime on your behalf.

Little by little ordinary decent folk like yourself are becoming increasingly aware that something just doesn't add up, and long may this continue, until eventually the lies via statistics that we are fed by our leaders will be exposed as such.

Time for a revolution then.
