Having just driven down to the beach in the 2CV to drop the girlfriend off for the may dip I find myself in a strange situation (at about 0430) I pulled into a side street full of pedestrians slowing to 5-10mph, and pulled over to the right parking on a set of double yellows. As I went down the street a group of americans moved over to the right, and then onto the pavement, treating them as usual for pedestrians I slowed, allowed them to move out of the way and pulled in on the right, on the aforementioned double yellows. I then got out of the car to a tirade of abuse for having 'come barrelling down the street and almost running them over' and then they called the police and started to leave a statement to that effect along with my numberplate etc. I moved on to go down to the beach for the dip and found a huge queue, so the girlfriend and I elected to return to the car and go to the west sands instead for the dip, got back to the car to find them on the phone to the police. I drove off after a long discussion with the gentleman who was ringleading the affiair (who was it should be added rather pungently smelling of spirits). He assured me that the police will be after me for this 'most dangerous driving', would I be best advised to pop down to the station later on to volunteer a statement (and persuade the girlfriend to do likewise) or alternatively to leave it and see if the police choose to follow it up. |

I really wouldn't worry. I don't think the police are interested in this type of thing. I think they have a lot more important things to deal with. James |

You could always call the local police up on their non-emergency number and ask them for advice on the situation if you're worried... |

As Xmas says, call the police or even better pop into the local police station, tell them your side of the story and that you are worried etc. etc. don't forget the drink bit  that should be good enough, you can get a URN referance number which is a police log system - (a number and todays date) which is your back up to say you have reported it.

Like others said, just go to the police station. tbh i wouldn't worry at all and if the worst comes to the worst, I'm sure there would be alot of cctv that could back up your side? |

If you do go to the Police station make sure all your documents, tyres etc are in order. A woman hit my car in ASDA car park and drove off, but on my return to the car another customer had taken her number and gave it to me. I went to the Police station to report the accident but they told me ASDA car park was private land and they could do nothing. What they could do however, was to examine all my documents and check my tyres even though I wasn't at fault. |

Thanks chaps, I shall shortly potter on down to the local police station and have a chat. I'll keep you posted on what they say. |

S.170 Road Traffic Act 1988 clearly mentions 'a road or other public place' and a supermarket car park is a public place (anywhere where the public have access, on payment or otherwise).
