In my opinion the sound of the engine was of an H diesel van.
I was too busy working, and too far away as they left, but I would have loved to speak to the owner of the van .

The owner of the DS explained that is's an import from Sweden and unrestored. Apparently they don't use salt on the roads in winter over there, hence it's excellent condition.

They use salt on souther part of Sweden, but much less when going to north and after some point (north enough) they don't. Same here in Finland, north enough and we don't have same kind rust issues what we have on center part and worst is at south...

Just wondered some time ago how rust free Toyota Carina from -86 was what had spent its life at Sodankylä, near the northest border. And here, about 800-900km souther, those cars just rusted away over decade ago...

Thanks Jasu.

Salt is only effective as a de-icer down t about -6 degrees, I believe, so that may be part of the reason it's not used further north. We had the same problems with early Jap cars here in the uk, dissolving before your eyes after each winter. Three years use, tops!

White E reg 2cv with white/blue striped roof (not beachcomber as far as I could see) heading north on the B2133 near Billingshurst mid morning today. Much waving, from me at least, couldn't see if he was doing the same due to the sun.

A red one with white wings spotted in Hemel Hempstead today. Looked quite nice, but I didn't have my phone camera activated soon enough.
