What are peoples experiences when it comes to registering a car in the UK after importation?

Just wondering if the age related number plate is based on the original maufacture date (i'm sure i read that this was someones experience) or whether it was based on 1st registration date.

My Acad was built July '81 & registered October '81. so could be either a W or X registration!

I had no French paperwork for the Mehari, but the previous owner (hi Pongo) had already written to Citroen UK to get confirmation of the build date. It was therefore registered from that. It was a very easy process btw.

Take a good book if you get called to a local office for an inspection. Five minutes of inspection, four hours of sitting around...

Depends on what you produce as proof of age. With the Slowlex, there was no French registration paperwork, so it went on the club's dating certificate from the frame number. On a car or van, they're certainly going to expect the carte grise.

(Oh, and DON'T send the original off. Send 'em a copy, and say it's all the vendor gave you...)

I've got the carte grise & on that the 1st registration date is 15/10/1981 so that'll make it an X reg. i don't want an X reg van, i want a W reg!!

Maybe if i got a dating certificate off Citroen then they'd wang it on a W?

Neil having just done jean claude I took the relevant paper work to the local dvla office including the carte grise (which they specifically asked for) and the acad was given a Y plate as according to the carte grise it was first registered in Jan 83. It actually left the factory in July 82.

Yo Dude,

Our Acad was built 18th May 1987 during the last few weeks of production, which would have made it D reg, but was not registered in Frog till 30th sept making it E reg over here, if Id of fancyed a D over E Id have to of swat the Carte Gris over the side on the ferry home, and got a build date off Mr S page at Citroen uk, made an appointment at local DVLA office to have the Van authenticated to their satisfaction, then awaited D suffix or if they were not happy a QQQQQQQQQQQ plate, which I could appeal of course..

Roll on..

Yes they would. Just tell them you got no paperwork with it. As Wiltz says, it's more of a palaver to do it that way though.

Thanks for the info chaps! This Mr Page at Citroen UK, would he be wanting some money off me in exchange for a dating certificate? I know when my old man re-registered his Honda monkey bike after it had been declared as scrap, Honda wanted £35 for the headed paper!
