Post Re: Solexes
Okay chaps, I've just taken delivery of a free Solex 3300, after a quick look I can see it needs at least a new front wheel, tyres/tubes, and a good rub down and repaint. I've no idea about the engine other than it is there and the front and rear lamps are there and unbroken :) I'll have a better look at it in the next week or so and give a bit more detail.

Any idea where the chassis plate/number is? I'm guessing I'll need that for the morons at DVLA (if/when it's ready to register).

it could be:
On the head tube of the frame
on the seattube, on one of the sides

is it a french build one? Than you dont have to look, 'cause they normally dont have a number..

you could check the engine number, and with that you can determine the build year

Post Re: Solexes
I've been messing with it this morning, the front wheel is scrap and so are the tyres and tubes. The frame is very rusty but it's all surface rust and it looks complete and solid. I'm thinking of painting it green and white to match the car  but got a fair bit of work to do before I can seriously think about colour schemes :) The cables appear to go through the frame, so it looks fairly impossible to replace them, can somebody give me an idea of what I need to do? The 19inch front wheel as mentioned needs replacing, can I go to Halfords or a local independent cycle shop and just buy a 19inch wheel off the shelf, or are the wheels unique/special to a Solex? What about the tyres/tubes? Can I source them locally? I have so many questions, but think I'll stop there for now. Cheers in advance for any help/advice given. :)

I'd be very surprised if Halfords, etc. could help you at all, I'm afraid. What size is the tyre? A search on ebay.fr for "solex roue avant" throws up a few possibilities.

I don't really know anything about Solexes, but I would think that, however it looks, the frame will have been manufactured first, and the cables added later on in the build process. If that's right, then somebody has managed to put them in there at some point, so it should in theory be possible to replace them.

Never mind any of that though, is it running yet? ;) photos?

The frame is has a hole at the side near the bottom, where the cable comes out the frame again. Only one cable runs through the frame, from the rearbrake, and also the wire for the rearlight.

I renewed the cables once on my girlfriends solex, and it was a bit of a hassle to get the cables out of the frame ithrough the hole, but wit a bit of steelcable (old brakecable) bended square (to match the inside of the frame) I managed to get the cable and the wire out.

Not worked on it since last week-(working long hours)-but will look at stripping the frame and de-rusting it sometime in the next week. :)
