 Re: Leboncoin/eBay finds
To be the devil's advocate, the quality of original parts - especially if from the 1970s - is better/different than new parts available today. I'm thinking especially of panels, their fit and steel quality. But also of engines and gearboxes, suspension arms and chassis. A non-mechanical voltage regulator will control the voltage more accurately than an old mechanical one, but to older guys like me, an old mechanical one which is repairable with feeler gauges and some emery cloth is more desirable. Additionally, if you're the sort who hates spelling a 2CV with capitals, then perhaps you'd also like the real thing under the bonnet as well as a charge indicator which goes up and down like they always used to. Sure, £20 is perhaps a bit much but it's a business, paying ebay's crippling fees as well as VAT and tax to HMG, supporting all those on state benefits. As anyone who's involved in the upper echelons of old Bentleys etc knows well, what price originality? The panels come from Italy and the metal is awfull,,, you are lucky if a wing or vent flap last you more than 2-3 years before it starts rusting,,where we sell original French second hand panels some 20 plus years old still in good condition! Martyn
Of course! Silly me. I'll rush over and buy that rotten chassis he has up for £350 then. And why not throw in the £400 Dyane engine that's clearly just been lifted from a scrapper. Got to better than what Ecas sell. <facepalm>

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1987-Citroen- ... 20c45b27fa Nice ... As for the £20 regulator ... while I wouldn't pay ebay prices for that stuff myself, he's not decieving anyone. He's selling a secondhand regulator in an untested condition, he's described it as such and someone's given him twenty quid for it. More fool them, say I, but you can hardly blame the seller for that.

 Re: Leboncoin/eBay finds
Bolloks hes an opportunist cashing in on the inflated bubble that is old 2cvs so in comes a crappy rusty D*lly - how does he know which panel is from the supply at Paris or Mangualde or was an argy wing fitted as a replacement 5 yrs ago ? supply and demand while there is people that think because its an old car like a Bently then original parts are worth more than the same parts from the same manufacturer that supplied the factory but new. quality of engines etc was no worse than the earlier ones what was worse was the build quality loose carb nuts poorley staked synchro rings being obvious examples - but the Portuguese rocker gear was better finish than the French ones....

 Re: Leboncoin/eBay finds
^^ That's true enough - and I deplore the modern trend for everything being far too expensive - but it's not quite my point. If I advertise, I don't know, an old shoe on ebay and describe it as "for sale, old shoe, worn out, £20" and someone chooses to buy it, I'm not ripping anyone off since I've described what I'm selling honestly and someone else has made the decision to pay my asking price. I don't like it (and I list stuff at a 99p start bid and let it find its own value) and I'd never buy an untested Dyane engine for £400 myself, but if someone else chooses to pay his absurd prices, then more fool them.

You can sell virtually anything on eBay. Someone will buy even the strangest of things for the strangest of prices.

If people think something's worth £x, then that's its value to them and their ilk. Sure, there are plenty around who will happily spend £6k+ on a resprayed 2cv with a cheapo, shiny chassis twisting and bending like there's no tomorrow and a new parts list as long as your arm - some of which will last half as long as the originals from the 1970s, if you're lucky. Equally there are those who will spend a very long time checking a seventies car on its original chassis before buying - one which is largely original and goes beautifully, but which hasn't had its history covered over with new paint and is a bit 'fretted'. And £1500 always sounds a lot for such a car Sean, I had 2cvs' crankcases tested for quality over 10 years ago by a metallurgist and he confirmed my suspicions - that the quality had deteriotated down the years. I laughed when Citroen announced the 602cc engine was now good for unleaded - I'm sure the reductions in quality came about around the same time - in the mid 80s.
