Something we should all be thinking about, particularly those of us 25-40

Not particularly exciting, but thought I'd mention it anyway  Just been round to Tesco and it's recently had the 'Scan as you Shop' system installed, so I used it and I won't using a cashier system there again. It's a doddle, as you can pack your bags as you're going around and it's an easy system to work. :)

... used to use the self-scan service at the Safeway (now Morrisons) in Rubery, near Longbridge. It was great - until they nabbed you for a spot check. That was a right pain, and made you feel like a bit of a crim. (Mind you, they never found the 12 bottles of Scotch that I'd hidden where the sun don't shine, so it could have been worse.) ;)

I despise those self check out things. I don't like supermarkets anyway, but the self check outs turn the whole experience from merely depressing to something far worse. The ones in our local Sainsbury's speak to you in this kind of patronising voice - "Have you swiped your Nectar card?" Please take your shopping!" Don't forget to clean your teeth!" and so on - and it always irritates me beyond endurance. And besides that, I always feel that scanning the stuff is their job, not mine ... are they going to expect me to stack the shelves next?

I agree with everything you've said.

Last Christmas I had the misfortune to shop in the Asda in Halesowen. When I came to pay I chose the self-checkout. Unfortunately, the checking unit threw a wobbler, and every time I put an item in the bag it started shrieking "Unexpected item in bagging area", necessitating a check from an assistant. Each unexpected item added a minute or so to my purchasing "experience". By the time I got to item 12 I lost my patience and walked out. It still bewilders me to think that I had the self control to stick with it until the 12th item.

I agree, it's not done for the customers benefit, the supermarkets think that if they can get the customers to do the cashiers job they can employ less staff and make more profit. The folks on the tills at our local tesco don't seem like the brightest sparks in the box, but they're always friendly and I'm happy to help keep them employed.
