You can't compare apple for apple. 2cv's are in a league of their own.

 Re: Leboncoin/eBay finds
I think the point being made is that 10k or over would have to be a mint condition car not a bodged together one
fair enough "restoring" a car but even the copious ammount of repair panels available my experience is most aren't the best of fit, and often the fitting leaves a lot to be desired when you see the progress photos or the repair in the flesh so to speak.

 Re: Leboncoin/eBay finds
My point was more that 2CVs are supposed to be basic cheap transport. Not overvalued "classic" cars. I know price rises are inevitable, but sometimes - in fact, always - it just seems absurd to me that a car like the 2CV can command the same money as a good used Rolls Royce. Ten grand is a ridiculous price to pay for any car with no interior trim to speak of, the grand total of two dashboard instruments and no heater fan. The world's gone mad ...

 Re: Leboncoin/eBay finds
The whole concept of mass production means that for a specialist to rebuild a car by hand to as new condition is always going to be expensive by comparison to an actual new car. Yes you can get 'restored' cars for £4-£5k, but don't be too surprised when the rust hidden in the seams of the body shell reappears in a few years time, even shot blasting to bare metal doesn't get that out.
The appeal of 2cvs, for me anyway, was mainly that they offered enormous fun for the price, and were 'quirky'. But with prices as they are, there are plenty of better value motoring thrills. Personally I've never felt a need to own an as new car, and struggle to see the appeal in paying a 4 figure price for a 2cv let alone a 5 figure price. To be honest, based on current market prices I can't see myself ever buying another 2cv.

 Re: Leboncoin/eBay finds
its always been something in the back of my mind,
io think the biggest problem, is there are going to be so many bodged cars now, as people want to make them looked restored to get the 5 figure sum, i think its criminal, but the demand is there,
my dad was telling me in his day a 2cv was the kind of thing you drove to the ground, parked up and got in another one and so forth,

The fun of them for me was that they were cheap motoring, and your dad (that makes me feel very old!) is quite right about how we used to drive them until they fell to bits. I suppose that's why the ones that are left are suddenly worth ridiculous money.

 Re: Leboncoin/eBay finds
was speaking to john aka squeezbox on the phone a week or two ago, he was saying he cut up a gray and gray charleston cos it had a small hole in the sill, (correct me if im wrong) a hole that would be seen as easily repairable these days, but he cut it up and scrapped it
shame its not still like that, my dad had a 87 white spesh i believe, think it was 87, mum had a dyane, and aunt had a blue (not sure what blue) 87 2cv with a stripey roof!
the other thing thats happening, bits of old 2cv's are being used and then there uselss, oneday, no more spares, will only be new parts!
let that day never come

 Re: Leboncoin/eBay finds
The thing is, they are classic cars now. Basic utilitarian proletariat vehicles yes, but last made 20 years ago and quite thin on the ground ,that and the fact they are a bit of a mid 20th century icon like the mini ,beetle etc and the prices are only going to go one way . You can see prices of well over £6000 for certain models of lambretta scooter now , great if youve got that model not so great if you want one - to me that puts in perspective a bit and a good 2cv for a few grand doesnt seem so out of the ordinary to me. Not that i'm defending it, i wouldnt pay it myself. One plus side i can see is that less will get chucked away and scrapped off now even 80s ones are moving into the relms of the classic car world . The thing is, with them being out of production so long you can't expect to pick up a cheapy ,run it into the ground and abandon it then go get another?

 Re: Leboncoin/eBay finds
Hmmm don't think they're THAT rare. I usually see a couple every month and near the port en route to Spa I spotted 2 2cvs and a dyane without even trying.
