Post Re: Solexes
Was wondering about the number of cables sprouting from the twist grip end of the handlebars, until I spotted what looks like a decompressor on the engine.

Looks to be a well thought out machine, is it to be 'restaurated' or will it stay dans son jus ?

Oh yes this is super slick (allegedly) '50s wunder-ped! It is a belt/centrifugal clutch primary drive and chain final drive, seperate pedal chain drive on other side of bike. It has all the mod cons : sprung front fork, drum brakes both ends :o & whitewall tyres  Sadly no roller drive tho... but just as slowly fun I hope!

 Could probably get a nice wicker basket above the headlight & fill it with tools for that essential instability...?
Dave; ebay natch - Stuckinthemuck in Dorset, at least that's his pied a terre here, he apparently lives in France & buys up Massy-? tractors & old mopeds ships them here & ebays them. There are 2 refs in Moped Archive to articles on Horsy but I haven't been able to access yet, otherwise the web is indeed ominously silent. It's not dissimilar to a Mobylette AV3 but not a badge eng. one. Does this mean I'll be black balled from the Solex forum?
ken; yes indeed, confused me for a while till I traced the cables, I suspect it's a 'negative' twist to decompress but none of the cabling is very free so not tried to hard, yet. Still @ the diesel soaking stage. Decom valve is leaking so will need to decoke, I hope. I'm in two minds about the juciness; the AZAM is staying visually barn fresh (tho hopefully I'm getting it back to AZAM spec - paperclips, etc.) and I fancied doing a really shiny number on this. It's not apparent from the pix but the colour is a metalic blue, bit darker than the original Hammerite blue, but copiously pinstriped in very narrow blue & red, every tube. Plus the broad white/red that shows on the pix. The chrome is nonexistant and the bars, especially, are heavily pitted (and possibly design specific; brazed into the stem) so the money fairey may dictate conservation as the only course.
Right, a free day :D so spark hunting, cable inspecting & a carb strip, fun fun fun!

Velo Solex fun by 2steamhorses(Bob), on Flickr

My first and only ride on a Velo Solex...amusing to say the least. I used to commute 20 miles on a Raleigh Runabout back in the late 1960's :-)

These things can get a little addictive - I will be happy when I start back to work in a month or two.

I am even off to look at a couple more tomorrow..... :o

And a 1963 Solex 2200
One owner from new and he died 2 years ago - quite emotional as I think it was his sister who sold it to me and she was a little sad to see it go.

They look great - much prefer the round down tube of the 2200 etc rather than square one on later ones. Much more like a bicycle.
