I can't make Lukes link work, but does anybody know if the 'you must have a speedo' rule applies only to cars built after 2001 or is it across the board? I'm desperate to bin my speedo but don't want to have to replace it in a couple of months at mot time.

I am old enough to remember when there was no test requirements for cars. When it was first introduced it was called a ten year test [only applied to cars over ten years old] Its introduction was to get the death traps off the road and it succeeded.

Now the test has no resemblance to its original concept. Check the statistics for accidents caused by mechanical failure. They are so minimal as to be almost immeasurable yet so much money is spent on checking cars each year.

I agree there should be a basic standard of checking on a cars mechanical condition but it has gone too far.

Why does a car fail with a split wiper blade or no screen wash fluid. High beam light... tish if you don't know your headlamps are on main beam then you shouldn't be driving.

Trouble is I think people now rely on the MOT to tell them when a light is out or their tyres are getting low. I do a walk around every time I use a vehicle but the amount of cars you see day in day out with the same light out is stupid.

A chap at work got a bit of a surprise when I borrowed his car, handed the keys back and informed him his tyres were shot and had been for some time as there was no tread on the shoulders of the tyres!
