James, your right.I think new drivers should be taken onto motorways at some point.Don't know how it could be done, that's up to the big wigs

They can be taken up and down a bypass as that's not a motorway, but it's just the same as one really.

Hmm,sorry to disagree old nail.I went to Oulton Park yesterday with wife and daughter,2CV not on the road yet,so we went in the wifes Yaris.I have to say,it was a nervy trip to say the least  .
People driving like nutters, lorries trying to pass on another, one doing 50,the other doing 50.5,cars cutting in front of you (just a few feet at 70).
And you can tell the people who are nervous, they just stay in the middle lane, afraid to move, going at 65mph.
No,the motorway is'nt a place for new young drivers of a nervous disposition who have not had any tuition on one.A bypass is'nt really like a 3/4 lane motorway full of fast moving idiots.

If you don't overcome things like that straight away you end up fearful of them and the longer you leave it the harder it is to overcome that. I'm a huge believer of getting something you've never done before over with as soon as possible. I really believe that all new drivers should have as much experience as possible and gain as much confidence as they can. I also believe that driving a wanky little 950cc Fiestas or 998cc Metros is worse than driving a more powerful car when they pass their tests. They are hardly going to teach them anything about car control or respect for the power of a vehicle.

Russ,I totally agree, but don't you think that new drivers should be taught something about driving on a motorway?
They can be a frightening place, even for an experienced driver.

Well I drove back from test centre (with instructor) on motorway, and I've been on the A56 which is basically a motorway a few times. Think I'm gonna go out a few evenings a week and go round the M62 a few times. Think I need to get used to motorway driving in a 2cv...

In Germany part of the test is night driving, skid pan and Autobahn tuition.
