But that's my point. The R4 was Renaults answer to the 2cv. It does generally the same stuff, it's simple, utility, separate chassis. And it has still got one quality that 2cv's are quickly losing - it's still cheap-ish. That one word in your last sentence will price us out of 2cv's. 'Iconic'.

People tend to think iconic cars more valuable. It happened with the Beetle. Whereas I determine value not in monetary terms but in how much pleasure the thing gives in daily use, and I'm sure a R4 would be a close run for a 2cv when the latter get too precious to enjoy yourself in. They sold eight million R4's.

I've said before I don't buy into classics for speculation, I drive them for enjoyment. So the values of classics rising is a bad thing for me not a good one. When the time comes, (as happened to the Beetle) that they are all snapped up for much more than they are worth it's an indication to shift your horizon a little. To get in at the bottom again where fun can still be had for not much money.

That's why I've started scanning Renault 4 ad's.

P.S. 602. The top link didn't work, but that's the fella alright. ;)
How about this for around £1500? - I'd have it.

Or this? 400 Euro.

It's all good. The words 'cheap and complete' have a magic all of their own. If it's classic, fun, and cheap what more could you want? Concern about investment potential or residual value is for wan... er sorry bankers.

I do hope youre wrong Mr Nail ....
My 2CV was never, and will never be "an investment" for me either.
It's a way of life,I've owned "A" series cars continuously since I bought my first Dyane in 1973,my present 2CV has,and always will be what I class as my "main car" [even though nowadays I drive a C4 too]
.....sadly,I suspect youre right though.

best regards
Terry

I've seen it with Beetles, Microcars, and now 2cv's.

Who would have thought a Bubble-car could ever be valued at twenty grand? Then the Cal-custom thing did for the prices of VW Beetles and the Bus. Old VW Campers can touch £25k with ease now, it's insane. Just as insane are young fella's driving around in lowered VW Beetles with surf boards on the roof, and calling each other 'dude' - when they live in Scunthorpe. :P

But it happens. Once a 'scene' or rose tinted glasses hits a car it stops being your little gem, the esoteric secret shared by the few, and it goes commercial. That's always sad to me but hey-ho. Another negative effect is the likely-hood of having your car nicked. Who would have worried ten years ago? They'll disappear now though. You can't stop it, that's just the way it goes, bloody shame though.

i sold mine 18mths ago for £3500
although i did completely rebuild it and a full 2 pack respray, and no rust underneath

i do wish i hadent sold my mk1 escort mexico and 1300 sport a few years back now though !!
i ve still got a vw variant squareback, but after looking at a lot of tatty rusty old vw camper vans i decided to buy a vintage sprite caravan instead as they were just so much money for so little...

There's nothing about that car that would justify that price is there. One of 800-odd made...so what? Wonder where it's been 'till now? And why sell now?

It reminds me of that old joke;

Pensioner goes to the newspaper to place an obituary. She's told it's £1.00 per word so she writes "Jim Smith dead". Seeing this the editor feels sorry for her. He takes her to one side and says; "Please take seven words for the same price - £3.00"

The pensioner scribbles four more words down and hands it back.

"Jim Smith dead - Ford Escort for sale".
