I was with a few others on Philip Island, near Melbourne, for the "Penguin Parade" (as dusk falls, thousands of little penguins come out of the sea and back to their nests). Bit of time to kill, so we went for a wander around the nature reserve next door. There's a little throng of people standing on one of the paths, staring at something on the ground. Sure enough, there's a little brown snake, curled up asleep, mebbe three or four feet from our feet, with nothing in the way. "Look, mate, it's a brown snake!" Yeh, I can see that. Is it something special, then? "No, mate, it's not a brown snake, it's a brown snake!" Ummm... After a few rounds of this, it turned out to be not just any old snake that just happened to be brown-hued, but a Brown Snake. A what? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastern_brown_snakeQuote: Venom - The Eastern Brown Snake is the second most venomous land snake in the world after the Inland Taipan.[2] Their venom is very toxic, and can be fatal; even juveniles have caused human fatalities. The venom contains both neurotoxins and blood coagulants.[3] Eastern Brown Snakes are also aggressive. Compared to most snakes that will flee when ever possible, Brown Snakes are much more likely to stand their ground, heightening the danger in an encounter. Without medical treatment, death is highly likely.[4] Oh. I stood back a bit.

You dont want a fucking scorpion in you're sleepingbag? But then again, I've never been to australia. But seen on TV that you want to check you're shoes for scorpions before putting them on in the morning...... Viking, why dont you chare you're wisdom in this area? (I hater bugs, in any country. So I too think the car is a great place to sleep) Russell wrote: Yes Viking, is what we hear about Australia being full of creatures that'll do you harm true? or it is all blown from all proportion? I know a girl who lived there for a while, and on her way to work she opened the sun visor of her car and a huge spider dropped onto her lap. She got out of the car and ran before it had even stopped No it is simply not true what you hear. More people are killed on Australian road than being killed by creatures. Yes some death occurs each year mainly shake bites, spider bites even the European wasp kills people. Crocs takes 1 or 2 people per year same for sharks but they like chewing on surfers. Some kids get in to trouble on the beach picking up ‘’interesting’’ things. Scorpions are rarely seen only when collecting firewood, you’ll need to look before grabbing the wood. Millions of Australian and tourist are camping in the wonderful outback with no worries. Some idiots die after 8 hours, trying to walk back to the last town, when their car breaks down. The sun or heat is also a killer. The huntsman is completely harmless but very big. When dropping form the sun visor it is easy to freak out. Here we sleep on the ground as we do often no worries at all. You don’t really need to sleep in the car unless its raining but that is unlikely during the dry season. Attachment:

Behaviour The Eastern Brown snake is diurnal (meaning it is active during the day). When highly agitated, they hold their necks high, appearing in an upright S-shape. But despite their fearsome reputation, brown snakes are reluctant to bite and react only to movement; standing still when in close proximity to one will result in it ignoring you. They are attracted to rural and farming areas, probably due to the large numbers of associated rodents. Such areas also normally provide shelter in the form of rubbish and other cover.

 Re: Camper conversions
I certainly wouldn't want to sleep on the ground in the middle east where there are Camel Spiders, especially after seeing the effects of what one did to a mate's face after he failed to use a net round his camp cot. Yeuch.
