I'm having a Joe Cocker day today, so here's another that helps let that old Jack Daniels slide down rather too easily. 8-)

No, but I could paint to it. :D

I enjoy classical music actually. I even have moments when I feel quite content to listen to relaxing Gregorian chants, that type of music is inspiring to creativity, but also music to listen to when sober.

That passage you linked to has a kind of ‘Schindlers list’ type aura about it, that sort of stuff can be very moving, and in quiet moments of reflection they can be very powerful too. It all depends on what your PRS (Primary representational System) is.

The music I tend to want when I’m drinking the old black jack is more bluesey, soulful , and dare I say tinged with sorrow. I go to very dark places occasionally due to my bipolar illness, and at those times it helps to have the singer appear to inhabit that same place. Misery loves company indeed.

Other times, when I’m on an ‘up’ phase I like to listen to fast moving stuff, I’ll also read perhaps four books simultaneously, paint lots of weird stuff, and become quite hyperactive and wrestless while getting very little sleep, such is the complexity of the human mind I suppose. I actually tried to paint how it feels, a sort of psychological portrait if you will, but I just can't get it, it turned out like this.

I think you got it :)

(By the way, that Cash song is the very first song I've heard by him that I genuinely like - and it's a lot. Whilst I appreciate (or accept) that he's a 'legend', his style never worked for me; Sunday Morning Coming Down is stunning when performed by it's writer Kristofferson, but is killed dead when given Cash's overly 'country' beat.)

 Yes, I used to listen to Frank Sidebottom on the radio at night. There's another guy who's name escapes me now but he did a parody of northern life in 'The Bradshaws' - brilliant!

DA try this one for Johnny Cash, it was his final album and I think he saved the best 'till last.

Mmmmm, that's good, Old Nail. Thanks. There's a real delicacy in his ageing voice - almost breaking. And that production is all that's needed - so much better than the early stuff of his that I've heard.

Someone else who caught me by surprise recently was Chuck Berry. Came across him doing a concert I think on Beeb 3 or 4 a couple of nights ago while channel surfing. Very good listening. If it's repeated - which they often are - worth a look-see.

Hurt by johnny cash is one of my favourite songs, it is better than the original and few covers manage that .

When Cash did this album he knew he hadn't not long left to live, these songs are his way of of repenting for deeds of the past, which is perhaps why they are so powerful. Someone once said that, come the day "To sit alone with my conscience will be judgement enough for me."

I think that explains the songs very well.

Go here http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/search?q=Chuck%20Berry for iPlayer links to the two recent BBC broadcasts featuring Chuck Berry. The camera directing/vision editing on the gig programme (1st link) is brilliant.
