Chris,
those inner ball joints aren't the parts which are most subject to wear.
These bits are the usual shopping list for a rack refurb, in my experience...

@ Dave,
it is handy to have access to the special tool for removing the original pinion, iirc. ;)

I rebuilt a steering rack for the first time just a couple of days ago, it turned out to be pretty straight forward. The parts Ken linked to were all it needed, the tool for removing the pinion nut would have been handy, but I made one from an old socket. It's also useful to have the tool for the castle nuts, the same as the ones in the track rods, http://www.ecas2cvparts.co.uk/track-cas ... -1617.html , and also the ball joint puller to remove the inner track rod ends, http://www.ecas2cvparts.co.uk/track-rem ... -1849.html .

Joolz,
good point about those other tools, however I get by with a length of 30x3 steel flat bent over at a right angle for the castle nuts, plus one of these... ;)

Hi Chris

There would appear to be movement where the track rods attach to the steering rack.

I think there may be play elsewhere, however I have not had the car jacked up (as I need to get some jack oil) to fully investigate.

Yes,I can concur that it is handy to have to tool to remove the pinion gear retainer.I didn't,but was lucky enough to find,on this very forum,a kind gentleman who lent me one.And I will be forever grateful for that, and all his advice.

Just make sure,if you do the job, that you replace the bush that the rack slide through,no matter what it looks like.I didn't,as I thought it looked ok.WRONG.Had to strip it again and replace it.

Hi guys

Thanks for your help and advice

Please could someone post an image of the pinion removal tool as I may be able to fabricate one or have something that may do the job :D

Got two Monroe shockers from Roy today and fitted them to the rear of The Shed - transformed the handling - will go and get some new ones for the front next week.....

Chris,
once you've taken a rack apart, you should discover that it's the sliding guide bearing which is prone to wear, whereas the inner ball joints should last 'almost' indefinitely, as they're only subject to a small 'rocking' motion.
Of course, adding a greasing point so that the replacement sliding bearing gets a regular supply of grease should ensure that it has a much longer life than the original... ;)

Ken,
What does that central grease nipple actually screw into?
