It would need to be quite a big shelf.

Few problems:
- Is it strong enough?
- How about the legal rights?
- How do you plan on making it?
- How on earth do you earth it?
- Can you pass a MOT with it?

As Joolz says, you'd probably have to sell them from the back of a truck, rather than 'off the shelf'...

1) try asking the vendor?

Also the GRP mehari, the 'El Cid' is a bit of a FAIL. It's so heavy!

GRP, to be structurally solid has to be really thick. The hull of my rents 36ft yacht, built in 1979 was 1.5" thick, she weighed 12 tonnes.

Nowadays, you can pick up German GRP yachts of the same length and they weigh 3-4 tonnes, but the hulls are only 5mm-12 mm thick. This is beacuse there's an awful lot of bracing provided by stainless bracing wires and cross beams.

Neadless to say that if you get your maths on and do the sums, despite inflation, the boats nowadays cost 3-4 times what my rents boat did in 79.

Of course, since the days of the Bijou, El Cid, etc... we now know lots more about GRP, but I don;t think it will ever be practile to nmake car body shells from. It's just not strong enough. And it's an environmental bitch. 100% non recyclable and is very difficult to destroy.

For wings, bonnets etc it's not a bad idea, but for a body, I'd FAR rather have steel surrounding me.

"100% non recyclable and is very difficult to destroy" GRP, difficult to destroy? I found an old GRP cab unit in the field opposite and chucked it onto a bonfire I had. The ensuing blaze resembled a plane crash with flames and black forty or fifty feet up. Within a couple of minutes, there was nothing left. GRP does burn well.

I also own a Rochdale Olympic PhII, only the second GRP monocoque to be constructed.

didn't Sam mention that GRP wasn't very 'environmentally friendly' (or words to that effect ) when its usable life was at an end?
By the sound of things, that conflagration you had wouldn't meet the requirements for environmental disposal.

From what I've read, there's a growing problem with GRP boat hulks which are being abandoned by their owners, rather than pay the costs of proper disposal...
