Is that still a toll bridge, Neil?

It is. Current charges are £1 for cars, although if you have a 'tamar tag' it's 50p a crossing. There's uproar at the minute as the Tamar bridge committtee want to up the tolls to £1 for tag holders! When you look at other bridge tolls it's still cheap. You pay upon entering Devon from Cornwall. The Torpoint ferry service is still running, although if you use that you will incur charges when you enter gods own country from Devon! You can't escape it unless you use the A30!

Paul,
true, but I'd reckon they've still got some way to go to match British achievements in bridge engineering. ;)
Maybe have a look at the worldwide impact these two organisations made?
& < http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cleveland_ ... ng_Company >

Still not sure if I regret turning down the job of engineer in charge of constructing the South tower of this < http://www.humberbridge.co.uk/ > back in 1973.
Big loss in bragging rights maybe, but the salary which John Howard & Co. offered me was laughable.

ken.

If I knew it was that cheap, I'd have disabled the 'avoid tolls' on my sat-nav, when I visited Cornwall in August. I ended up going the A30 route, a nice drive, but took forever in a 2cv towing a Combi-Camp.

These 2 aren't very far from me, across the Tees

But this has got to be my favourite. It was always hard to keep my eye on the road when crossing the Road Bridge running parallel to it

Ah, but it depends on what part of the county! North Coast use A30, A38 for the South Coast. I come from Launceston [Lanson] originally, so cut across from Liftondown. Always smile when I see my favourite place-name a few miles beforehand - "Broadwoodwidger".

Neil - where you from? I used to work in the big city too! Educated in Launceston and Callington (explains a lot), socialising in Tavistock and Saltash - nice to hear from a fellow Tamar-valley-er...

DD, Lanson & callington?! you're a proper bumpkin. At least you're not from Bodmin - they eat their young down there! When you get a strong easterly wind you can hear the dualling banjos from here!

I'm from Saltash; not a bad place until you decide you want to travel somewhere centralish & it becomes a right royal PITA.
