Post One for the Tecno Mac Users
I have a Rollcentre T200 download lap timer for the race car, which works ok on the out dated Sony Vaio that I have, I would like it to work on my MacBook, now this is where it gets all technical (I am a dimly when its comes to all this)

www.rollcentre.co.uk/rollcentre/html/t200_lap_timer.asp

For a start the unit has a Serial connector (Mac's only have USB) I have brought one of those USB to Serial adapters, which came with a Small disc to load, Mac only takes big discs.

Even if I can load this how/what programe will make it work or won't it!.

Any help out there

Simon

First off - what Serial-to-USB converter did you get? You'll need to check the supplier's website to see if they offer any Mac drivers for it - because I doubt that your biggest problem is the size of the CD (I presume you mean it came with a chop-down CD of some kind, rather than a floppy?)
You might be lucky - this may do the job... http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/d ... river.html

Even then, though, you'll need to either find some software that'll work with the device under OS X or - probably easier - use Parallels or BootCamp to run Windows on your Mac, so that you can use the Windows software.

Finally, if/when you do get it all playing, how peed off are you going to be when you drop your nice shiny MacBook in the pitlane? If you drop a cheap sacrificial Windows laptop, life goes on a bit easier, right...?

If t'were me, I'd be either getting a good used laptop for not much, or buying a new small/light netbook. A quick look at Dell's website shows a Mini10 is going to be less than £350 inc VAT - with two years of accidental damage cover... For a pit-lane machine, that sounds like a bargain...

thanks toomany

I have down loaded the link and then found another, no info on the lap timer at the moment, so will give it a try once it has some laps on it, I do take your point regarding the pits, its just a pain having to download then move across to the mac,

cheers

Simon

The USB-Serial adapter may work out of the box on Mac OS X. (I've had old laser printers and an A3 Epson with a broken USB port working fine)

Problem is having the software to send or get the data off a serial device... I don't know anything about your lap timer.... but did have an old mobile that had a propriety serial-usb interface and no mac software. I was able to run it from Windows emulation on my Mac (V-slow in the pre-Intel Mac days!) but it saved firing up a whole other Windows 'puter!

Little discs are cute! but YOY!

I'd have no worse an understanding of this thread if it were written in Swahili.
