It'll certainly do the job.

As with Voisin etc, there's the problem of reusing a 2wd original-style chassis, so not particularly strong and compromised design, but that's something I don't think you guys in France can get round legally, is it?

Are they not allowed to replace their chassis with anything other than OEM units?

Is it me or has he pop-riveted his floors in?

So what DO they need to do for the CT? does the car have to make it there under it's own steam? does the whole car need to be there at the same time or can you bring the front end along one day then bring the rest of the bits along another day?

It sounds like anything coming out of France will need a re-build before you even dare approach the monkey at the MOT station (that damned toffee hammer has a lot to answer for!)

Well we had the contrôle technique man visiting us 2 days ago to inspect our last 6 month of 2cv buying. When buying a used car without rego and being a legal 2cv garage the law requires us to inform the police of any car we buy from private people. Next is to transfer all cars to our names (carte de grise) to make all the paper work correct. From here contrôle technique is just a formality. The guy looked at several 2cvs and explained that rust in chassis, body, floors and sills etc is not a problem. One van has BIG holes in the floor but not to worry, it will pass. The main things are brakes, steering, lights and indicators. The rest is not important, piece of piss.

Don’t know much about modifying the chassis but one local English man wants to buy one of our vans and fit an electric motor in it. Things like that needs approval from Drire (direction régionale de l’industrie de la recherché et de l’environnement) like many other things here, if your papers are spot on all door will open.

Have to admit, I don't have a problem with the "strength" of the UK MOT... Just look at some of the collisions that various 2cvgb/I2F people have walked away from in lately, and think about what the outcome might have been in a rotten car.

I agree - a 2CV is more than just a chassis with an 'upturned pram' bolted to it to keep the weather off the passengers.

Structurally it was designed as a whole, with the two large transverse box sections (front bulkhead and rear seat box), longitudinal tubes forming the side sections (sill, A post, screen pillars and up and round to the C post - braced by the B post) and connecting boxes forming an integral part of the strength.

Drive one with a rotten shell to see the difference - cornering is hugely compromised as the chassis moves more than intended, I imagine a crash wouldn't be too great either
