@Jasu

Your opinion required.

If you take the splined 5th gear and run it with the 4th gear from main shaft do they "Mesh" OK????

^I'll take 5th gear out, and replace it by 4th gear. Then make an idler gear from mainshaft (3rd or 4th, they seem to have same pitch, but maybe they make some whining) ant take rear drive out with 4th gear. Quite confusing to read what I wrote, sorry if I have mislead by someway...

So, I'll just throw away anything reagarding 5th gearing, only use 5-speed gearbox with only 4 speed gears on. And take power to rear wheels from place where 5th gear used to be...

Why not....

Leave 5th gear on Main shaft with syncro/dog/fork etc.

Use Splined 5th gear as idler gear ( which is spare from from top shaft)

Use another 5th gear from main shaft for the output shaft.

I have a spare 5th gear with bush/syncro/dog etc

Ration is 1:1

I'll keep that on mind. Have spent some quality time at garage today...

GS 4-speed, GSA 5-speed, LNA and Visa...

Image
Some output studs...

Image
LNA and GSA studs with same (bigger than earlier GS) diameter, also LNA has same bolt pattern as 2CV drive shafts. Makes living little bit easier with these...

Image
5-speed parts on Visa casing...

Image
5-speed parts on LNA casing...

Image
LNA mainshaft, plan is to make from that an idler gear. Just need to make more measurements before start to modify...

Like that it could be installed. Need to cut some space for bearing, not much, but better do that with milling machine what I haven't on garage. And then install another gear under that, with maybe Land Rover output shaft and flange. Some planning is done, measured from 5-speed rear flange the drill pattern for new flange. Original is 10mm steel plate, I'm thinking to make new housing from 10mm aluminium plate, it could be strong enough for that, but of not, 10mm steel plate is next...

Both GS and GSA have 8/35 diff ratio, LNA has 8/33 and Visa 9/35. All gears inside are same on LNA and Visa, GS and GSA differs surprisingly lot, but all of them have same ratio on reverse...

Rear bearing on pinion shaft is was same on GS and LNA (62/25/25,5mm), so is on GSA and Visa (62/24,5/27,3) if I had correct measurements...

Edit: That 4-speed box is from 1015 and 5-speed box is from 1299 X3, just checked from list what was on Cats-Citroen site...

Citroen certainly had a lot of variations!

Perhaps a solution, for a compact idler gear.

Select required gear.

Bore out the centre Mill or Lathe (Case Hardened so some sparks at the start)

Put in Roller bearing from Layshaft

Make simple shaft to fit inside Bearing thin thrust Washer at both ends, centre bolt to hold shaft
No splines required
This is how Suzuki Jimny do it :D

In you picture 6 "idler gear" thats a "lay-shaft" .

Maybe, yes. But I have had some years to study at school (over ten). Another issue is with my brain damage, I lose some words sometimes, yesterday I tried to find a word learn, totally lost it. Even with Finnish words, not so nice when try to explain something to someone, without correct and very familiar words... Perkele...

Your descriptions are nearly always very good, but as always picture or diagram does the job, no translation required ;) .
