Post subject:  What's it like living with a 4x4?

I'm having bad thoughts about building a 4x4. One part of my mind thinks I probably wouldn't get much use out of the 4x4 aspect - I doubt I'd get a chance to go to some of the great events that are written about here.

Given that - what is it like living with a 4x4? Is it something you would drive to work in, or really just a weekend play thing? The sensible part of me thinks that just jacking up the suspension on a strong chassis (leading on from Sean's post on the raid section) and some decent tyres would get me through most of the green lanes and less extreme offroad sections available to me here in Surrey (which, I bet, there aren't many of!)

It's a weekend plaything and if you intend to events in it you should expect to break things, that said, I enjoyed mine.

Thanks Roy - sounds like it is not the thing I'm looking for then. My weekends are pretty non-existent.

If you somehow can make 2 cars, 1 for work and 1 for play...

Otherwise do as you told, strong chassis, Vredestein tyres and a Quaife difflock from Louis Barbour...

The Quaife difflock really make a diffrence..... you can reach places you can't in a normal 2cv...

A 4x4 is slow, loud, uses more petrol a.s.o. so as a daily driver it is not recommended..

My road would be. Making a car with the looks of a 4x4 but not the disadvantiges....

Thanks very much! Yes - I think you've convinced me that making a car with the 4x4 looks and a percentage of it's capability (over and above the standard 2cv capability) is a better route.

Now if I can stop drooling over this Voisin Acad I might get some work done today...

It works amazing for me! I have been places that "serious" 4x4 have trouble with...Image

Everything that Lpgo said applies here.

Take a Louis Barbour chassis and a aks400 you still can have the flat surface in the loading bay...

I don't like that at the Aca.

It is such a perfect car but then theres that altar in the loading bay !!!!...

Ask Mark Lewis he has the most experience

basically you lose about 10 to 15 % top speed and fuel
but get a hell of a lot of fun
meet loads of really interesting people travel all over europe or more and spends thousands of pounds!!!
Only 2cv recommended as Ak types are shit at getting in and out of small places ( woodland etc)
or i can do you a special raid chassis with Quiafe and a fuel tank guard!

You could probably use it every day, you just have to be prepared to drive a bit slower and have your radio louder!

A Barbour 2WD chassis and a Quaife will get you to most places and be really usable.
