What Citroen did in reality is very smart

Build a very cheap platform
not so stiff
But good enough and strong enough for 100, 000 miles so long as rust doesn't get to it
MOST important
From a manufacturing point of view
Very QUICK to spot weld and build up

= least amount of labour

the reason the chassis is like it is is PRICE of production against use

I reckon a original chassis would take no more than 2 t 3 hours max to build


and trust me that is Quick for a chassis

in today's rates in portugal that would be say 40 Euro labour!!

material cost on mass about 50 Euro max

retail = about 1000 Euro nice mark up

The big difference between Tatra and that extra tube down the middle of Louis's chassis is that on the Tats, that's all there is - and the suspension rotates around it, giving them stupid amounts of flexibility and wheel travel.

On the 2cv4x4, it's just there as extra rigidity inside the usual-style chassis, not dissimilar to Ken's cross-bracing.

It's not as if there's not been 2cvs with chassis closer to Tatra, either - the Argentinian IES (2wd and 4wd) used a central spine. Mind you, that was probably closer to Lotus than Tatra...

The other option would be to use the central tube as a torque tube, a la Porsche 928 or Volvo 360...

what about the large lump of metal which appears at 0.53 in this video?
Looks very much like a chassis to me, which fits wiith the torque tube acting as a subframe to carry the drive.

In fact, the spring assemblies for the front axle are attached directly to the chassis, whereas the remaining springs act between the swing axles to give maximum articulation.

I'd doubt that the tube on its own could have sufficient strength to cope with the loads imposed on it in some of the many guises in which those trucks were made.
