A welded diff would only be of use if you were driving on mud or sand all the time. If I engage the front diff lock on my 4x4 on any other surface it it impossible to steer so not really practical.

A welded diff would be the ideal way forward but i reckon it'd break quite easy, Mr barbour would know better than me though.

Top tip carry spares and know how to fit them. (Or travel with someone who does)

Some Huppel Trophy damage. (and this is usual)

A 2x4 2CV is always hunting for grip and the it takes its toll on the driveshafts...

Do diffs break readily or will the shafts go long before that?

Driveshafts and half shafts tend to go before the diff, which is good in a way as they can be replaced without taking the box out so long as you have a spare.

A good kinetic tow rope will also prolong the life of the gearbox. If you use one when towing a 2CV out of a ditch for instance there is no snatch and jolt so there is no sudden load on those components. It will also lessen the risk of the tow vehicle driver and the tow car driver getting whiplash.

On the 4x4s diff failure is generally due to the diff lock being used on road. (Tho I broke a diff whilst towing a Land Rover out of some very sticky mud.)

NOTE TO SELF. recover nothing heavier than a 2CV!!
