Pete,
looks as though that had been in the process of failing for some time, judging by the witness marks on the broken section embedded in the shackle...
Out of interest, are you using knife edges or round pins/bolts in the eyes?

@ken
I thought it had fatigued either side also, right next to the thread.
Round bolts as the moment.

Interested in differences

ps
Need fabricate a way of holding the Knife-Edge with the correct orientation.

Pete,
in answer to comments 1 & 2.
Friction between the bolt and eye will introduce a bending moment in the tie rod, which will be greatest close to the pivot.
The point of failure is exactly in accordance with that loading.

The advantage of a knife edge is that it's as near as you can get to a frictionless connection, with the 'edge' pivoting against the inner face of the eye, rather than needing to slide.

Re. 3. Weld a small plate onto the knife edge hanger, with a triangular hole formed in it?
In your case, maybe use rear knife edges on the front as well as the rear, in view of those 'shopping expeditions' you're fond of undertaking. :lol:

To add to the stress at that point - on full movement of the arm is the rod catching the end of the spring housing causing the it to bend?

@ChrisW
No scraps or marks on either of the of the rear rods.

Replaced both rears with 12mm threaded bar.
Will examine the front, weather permitting.

Is threaded bar strong enough?
