Suggestion:
Meeting point Tunis in Tunisia, straight down or some zigzagging to Ghana or thereabouts. Back up along the west coast of Africa to Morocco, across to Spain and finish at the 2cv world meeting in France

Interesting, can you show one from further south, maybe Ghana or that region. It may rain more and heavier when it decides to come down in particular closer to the ocean. When is it dry and weet seasons in Africa?

Thanks got it. http://www.worldtravelguide.net/country ... Ghana.html
It looks like that June is not the best time to hit that area. July is better.
Raiding in mud is not good fun, maybe the 4x4 guys would love it, not me.

Hi Viking. I like the idea. In 1975 I travelled from Morocco through Algeria, Niger, Nigeria and on to Nairobi. You need to travel across the Sahara in winter - November, December. Its cold at night but nice during the day. I think in 4 weeks, you will only be able to travel one way. The Toureg Trail allows 4 weeks to arrive in Benin (8500-9000kms).

If one was to do a round trip (Tunisia, Benin/Ghana, Morocco), I would suggest starting in Morocco, then south along the Atlantic coast to west Africa (the same route as the Taureg Trail). On the return, head to Agadez in Niger then up to Tamanrasset in southern Algeria, up through In Salah and then either back to Morocco (Fez) or to Tunis. The reason for going this way is that you are travelling east, not west, along the bottom of the Sahara. Travelling in dusty conditions in the late afternoon straight into the setting sun is a great way to destroy your suspension because you didn't see the obstacle. Few Raiders are that keen that they have a problem driving into a rising sun. The sun is usually well up before they get going.

Don't know what the road is like between Agadez and Tamanrasset, but in 1975 it consisted of 44 gallon drums painted white, spaced 1km apart. The desert there is absolutely dead flat for 360 degrees. Everywhere is a road. It is very easy to get lost as there are no features. There is nothing for 1000 kms between Agadez and Tamanrasset, so petrol is a huge problem.

Maybe the Tuareg Trail route is the most realistic within the time period, but again travel towards the cooler months.

G'day John. Good to see you here. I didn’t know that you have traveled Africa. Thanks for sharing your knowledge here, the more the better. Very good point with the setting sun in the west. We certainly know from Raid OZ how difficult it is driving straight in to the setting sun. I wonder when it is sunset in Africa half way down in June.
Road conditions sounds interesting, just my cup of tea, tough but possible.

1/Thats an awfully ambitious trip!

2/ Hope thats a joke  Easter (April)south of the atlass was very very hot!

To cross the Sahara twice in one trip in the hight of summer is pushing it .Bear in mind the factory raid had huge 4x4 trucks in support as well as support from Total airlifting fuel on the Tenere leg. Sure things have"improved" since 73 but a 200 mile range between fuel stops its going to be quite a logistical feat.
