Hi...I am still alive :D
We didnt have much problems. Only broken chassis and broken gear box... too fast driver. But me as a mechanic in that car... me and other raiders found solutions for every problems we had. OK, we change latter in Cairns gear box that TEC team was carrying.

Nice time we had in that raid...

A trip down memory lane, good stuff Janez. Do you have some other photos from that Raid, maybe the stuffed gear box.

No, sorry... That was taped on video but I have no idea where did I put that box.

Driving from Cooktown to cairns without gearbox was very funny thing to do. Greassing open gearbox and that little of what left inside every 20 km , push starts from fellow raiders, having good time,...

Happy memories...

You never walk alone. In this case, swimming. I broke my chassis too but not the gear box.
I think you only had 4th gear left after a whole nights work and managed to drive to the end.

Not to sidetrack the question Van or Saloon. No worries for both of them

For our raid 2cv in RAID OZ 2000 I made an boot extension . In Slovenia is common to have this on 2cv-s for traveling. You can sleep in it , you can carry lot of not heavy stuff in it, you can have youre cooking gear in it.

Yep, finnish invention... Do not put any heavy stuff in, but only light stuff. Make it so, that you can open it, i mean the back wall off the box. It only needs 2 bolts to fit, so it is quickly taken off.

Yes Dago... I did not say that is my invention. In seventies and eighties a copy was produced in our country by some local firm. A plastic one. Only 2 bolts... But everybody was angry on poor design. Water was leaking everywhere around and normally we had wet everything inside . And many times we lost our extension on the roads...
We always try to do something better and in 1995 I made this design. Also other one that you can open .
The main improvement is that on the sides is a water channel so that the water can go inside down and in the bottom out and not staying inside. And beside that this channels are like side reinforcement for attach (bolts).

This is main part of my design...and I think it is unique in 2cv world... ad-least I did not see somewhere else in my 20 years of traveling around... (please don't copy)

And in raid we had jerrycans for gasoline and heavy other stuff in it and it survive the trip.

It's called an "Esch" but should be makable by yourself.

What are the advantages of that above a van?

Topic hijack!!

A Bedouin!! Belinda could look the part and is already part way to being a camper. She probably isn't up to expeditions yet though :?

Aren't those quite rare? A Mehari with a custom hardtop could also be a choice, no problems with rust.

I can't say for sure but this is just a guess. I would think Captain Krimsons Esch is a lot lighter than a 2cv van. I can lift a 2cv shell on my own, just, but having tried to move Toomany2cvs van, even with 3 people it was incredibly heavy. I guess it's also useful to have the doors opening on the back and maybe also it can be moved from one 2cv to another?
