Just lifted this off the Racing forum:

Quote:
You may know that Mallory Park Circuit is having problems with local residents objecting to noise and that the company that runs it say they cannot continue in business if they are limited to the number of uses a year that the County Council intends to impose on them. If they cannot use Mallory Park as a race circuit then sale for housing is the likely outcome.

The petition is a long way off the 100K signatures needs to get the Gov to take notice, so please add yours now! See:

We cannot afford to lose one Race Circuit - once its gone its gone and in this 'enlightened' age there is no way another will be created in the UK

So sign it and stop it being bulldozed and turned into a picket fenced housing estate.

A quick google, and it becomes clear that - as ever - it's not quite that simple...

100,000 (or any other number of) signatures isn't some guarantee that the government will take notice. Nor is it even the government's problem. It's entirely down to the local council. And they've already said they're putting the locals before the email storm. They've also said that they don't intend or want to shut the track down - that would entirely be a choice of the management.

At the end of the day, p'raps if the management of Mallory hadn't pissed off local residents by holding "awesomefest", they wouldn't have brought this problem on 'emselves...

Oh, and they also claim they "need" to extend the 92 days they've been restricted to since the '80s to 160 days/year...

I've been following this on the Motorsport magazine website. As Adrian says, it's not as simple as NIMBY locals against the circuit. That said,Mallory's one of my favourite circuits and I'd be really disappointed if it closed.

Sadly it's done. Mallory is no more.

Further to all earlier updates, we are sorry to announce the cancellation of all future track and non-track events at Mallory Park, with the exception of the LOROS Fireworks charity event on Saturday, 2 November, which will continue as planned.

Although further to the above the company that ran racing there is still talking to the circuit owners and local authorities, they are hoping to bring racing back one way or another, but i personally am not hopeful.

I think its criminal people move to a village with a race track and complain about the noise, move somewhere else and do your research first next time you fun police types!!!!

It seems to be fairly well established that that ISN'T what's happened here. What has happened is that the operator have ridden rough-shod over a THIRTY year old agreement, throwing it away with the excuse "Well, we need to make more money".

That's true. The sad thing is that a good many of the local residents are now receiving abuse from motorsports "enthusiasts" because of their perceived role in closing Mallory.

True to a point Adrian..but...
Its true to say the operators have been riding rough shod over the agreement for very many years and a blind eye has been turned by all, only the fact 'some' local residents have very recently been up in arms about it has caused the situation to get out of hand.

And as Rhythm T says, its getting into a pissing contest when the locals start getting abused by motorsport types. Not helpful.

Its a big balls up and it should never have happened.
